For my project, I created Fable Companion Co, a design studio that partners with publishers to create visual companion materials for books with large casts of characters. Fantasy and fiction novels, can overwhelm readers with character names, relationships, and story details. To address this, the project uses the first Game of Thrones book (A Song of Ice and Fire) and second book from Heroes of Olympus (The son of Neptune) as an example, showing how Fable Companion Co could collaborate with a publisher to create a companion pack that helps readers track characters and relationships without disrupting the reading experience.
One challenge in this project was creating character reminders and descriptions that support the reader’s memory without revealing spoilers. To solve this, I developed a scratch-off system for the bookmarks in the companion pack, allowing readers to uncover character details gradually as they progress through the story.
Overall, this project demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance the reading experience by helping readers stay connected to complex stories and characters. Through the collaboration between Fable Companion Co and publishing companies, the companion pack provides an immersive and interactive way for readers to engage with books while reducing confusion and maintaining the excitement of discovering the story as they read.
